18. What do they do?

Home Observation Assignment (Party Politics, Paper III – Introduction to Daily Politics)

A part of every NILS course is the observation and analysis of real life events. Students are provided with pocket books to record such observations. This facility is not available for students paying in instalments.

An assignment for the Party Politics course asked students to select any well circulated newspaper and analyze the political news to find out what sort of political activities are carried out on a day-to-day basis by party functionaries and ministers.

A student noted the following political activities from a national newspaper:

- Submitting nomination for an election

- Dealing with college unions

- Forming allied fronts to fight elections

- Taking road repair measures and informing the residents about the person who has kindly allotted funds

- Maintaining a balance among voters, media, mafia, underworld and syndicates.

- Showing solidarity with the poor

- Defending certain government decisions that have backfired greatly

- Criticizing new taxation imposed by a government run by an opposition party

- Threatening the opposition

- Creating honorary posts in the administration to accommodate supporters

- Hitting back at critics

- Talking about taking firm steps against terrorism, inflation, corruption etc.
