From Introduction to Office Environment by P. Kaur and C. Rao (Suggested Reading, Office Dynamics, Paper II – Rumours and Gossips)
Information passes in four different forms down a standard office
hierarchy.
From the top level the information flows smoothly to the next level.
From that level downward the information is more secretly guarded and instead
of flowing, it drips down or at best trickles down to the immediate subordinate
level(s).
This continues till it reaches the level where gossip breaks out and
the secrecy of the knowledge is violated. This leads to an explosion of
information in every direction.
Any further downward passage of information
will take place in the form of rumours.
The speed of dissemination of information:
Rumor > Flow > Gossip > Drip
